(a) Valentina Tereshkova has been described as "proletaria" because she came from a working-class background, with her father being a tractor driver and her mother working in a textile plant.
(b) Tereshkova was born in a village in Central Russia on March 6, 1937. Her early schooling was not enjoyable, and she left school after a few years. She later completed her education through distance learning. She became interested in parachuting from a young age and began training in skydiving at the local Aeroclub.
