After shooting, the editor assembles the pieces of footage into a coherent whole. Editing has been one of the few major roles in filmmaking open to women, a fact that is all the more significant because the editor is the person who gives a film its final shape, makes conform to the will of the producer (during the studio period) or the director (who, in the post-studio period, overseas the editing process). Many films are saved in the editing process. Bad acting can be covered up by cutting away from a talentless actor to something or someone else in the scene, with newly recorded lines dubbed in to create a better performance. A film editor needs great dexterity, a sharp eye for detail and rhythm, a prodigious visual memory.
