Actors are the most recognizable, most promotable, sometimes the most memorable element of the film. They create an illusion of embodiment, of giving story flesh and bone. They are turned into simulacra of our desire representations of what we think we want to see. They are our collective imaginary, the cultural repository of images of beauty, sexuality, romance, strength and power. Filmmakers, who at first (long ago, at the turn of the century) tried to keep their players anonymous so they would't have to pay them a lot of money, soon had to yield to public curiosity public desire and activity promote the people who turned our to be their most valuable commodity. Good film actors and actresses often have the talent to create a role within a film to another. We saw an example of this in Jimmy Stewart. Some screen players create personae, versions of themselves that are made up of attitudes, gestures and facial expressions so coherent and maintainable that they become instantly recognizable and sometimes more interesting than the particular film they are in.
