The art of asking oneself critical questions that lead either to new answers or to genuine revitalizing of old answers may not be entirely amenable to instruction. But it is a necessary art nonetheless, for any person who wants to be free. It is an art that all philosophers have tried to pursue, and many of them have given direct guidance in how to pursue it. Needless to say, it is an art the pursuit of which is never fully completed No one thinks for himself or herself very much of the time or in very many subjects. Yet the habitual effort to ask the right critical questions and to apply rigorous tests to our hunches is a clearer mark than any other of an educated person.
