- [{"text": "The Neolithic Age in Indian subcontinent approximately dated from 6000 to 4000 BC. The chief characteristics of this period are settled life, animal husbandry, and some form of cultivation which depended solely upon the use of stone. The manifestations of the Neolithic Age are noticed in Baluchista,the southern Deccan, and perhaps also Kashmir. There is a subsequent phase, beginning in Baluchistan and spreading through the subcontinent, in which copper and bronze, supplement stone. This is called Chalcolithic. Sometimes Neolithic and Chalcolithic phases merge and hence the period is called Neolithic and Chalcolithic. The relics of the Neolithic Age are found in great abundance in various parts of India. At a site called Burzahom situated at the vale of Kashmir about six miles north east of Srinagar, pit dwellings, houses of mud or mud brick, sometimes with mud plaster are found. A number of burials, chiefly of crouched skeletons in oval pits were found. Neolithic people in Southern India domesticated cattle, sheep and goats. The economy largely depended on cattle raisings. From the beginning the southern Neolithic culture is associated with people possessing herds of cattle, sheep and goats and developing in course of time, a stone blade industry. It passes through three distinct phases, of which the second and third see a steady increase in the small number of copper of bronze tools. Their pottery was predominantly handmade grey or buff brown. The settlements were usually made on top of granite hills or on leveled terraces on the hill sides.
